Talk/Workshop: “Untangling resilience: Between memory and oblivion”

Green June 2018,
Friday, June 29th,
2:30 to 5:00 pm

During the month that marks the celebration of the World Environment Day, SARAS is part of the activities included in Green June, an initiative promoted by the Municipality of Maldonado, among other institutions, by offering an open event entitled: “Untangling resilience: Between memory and oblivion”.

This is a free-of-charge activity targeted at the general public which will include an introductory talk and a workshop. During the initial presentation, Néstor Mazzeo (SARAS Executive Director) will introduce and familiarize participants with the concept of resilience thinking, one of the corner stones that mark SARAS work.

The second part of the event will consist of a collective creativity workshop lead by Silvana Juri (Communications Assistant at SARAS), during which participants will be able to actively and creatively explore the breath and depth of these concepts. By using participatory design methods, we will try to build a unique object that may help us to imagine, understand and materialize the concept of resilience from a more artistic collective and local perspective.

Fostering the art-science link

From its beginnings, SARAS Institute has worked towards enhancing the integration between different knowledge and disciplinary fields. The reconcilement between the sciences, the arts and the humanities, as a strategy to analyze, understand and find solutions to complex problems has proven to be a more efficient alternative when trying to advance the comprehension of such problems where nature and society are conceived as a whole -the so-called socio-ecological system. On this occasion where the topic of resilience is approached using methods from the arts, we will try to bring these often remote fields closer, exploiting art´s transformative capacity from a direct, lived dialogue between participants while fostering connection, comprehension and expression through active participation. The art-science link represents, in this sense, a tool and a key element potentially able to accelerate societal changes that will help us to build sustainable futures.
