I Seminar and Public Debate on Emerging territories in the Eastern Region of Uruguay

The 1st Colloquium-Public Debate on the construction of the Territory in the Eastern Region will include over fifty presentations, national and international experts, and will seek to contribute to the decision-making processes on the territory in the region.

From September 14 to 16, in the University Center of the Eastern Region Maldonado and Azotea de Haedo.

After the call for research carried out in August, a broad agenda for the intense 3-day event has finally been presented. “Viento del Este” (East Wind) Ist Colloquium – Public debate on the construction of the territory in the Eastern Region is organized around five thematic areas and will include presentations, posters, round tables, exhibitions and interactive workshops. Presentations range from the conditions of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, to issues related to social development, territorial segregation, migration policies, tourism, among other.

The first day will be focusing on two areas: “The territory and its socio-demographic dynamics” and “Transforming economies and development models” with a Seminar on “Migration and public policies” co-organized by the Ministry of Social Development (MIDES).

On Friday 14th, presentations will be grouped by the following topic areas: “The impact of the tourism sector on development” and “Territorial Planning and Governance”. At the end of the day, Tom Angotti, Professor Emeritus of the City University of New York, Fulbright Scholar will conduct his conference on “Rethinking the relationship between man and nature. Environmental Justice, Climate Change and Co-management of Commons”.

Presentations grouped by topic “Valuing natural and cultural resources. Landscape and heritage” will be held on Saturday 15th. There will also be a workshop – debate, to discuss the priority issues of the Eastern Region and how to address them in order to move towards a more just and sustainable territory. Towards the end of the event, national and international short films on transformational economies and development models will be screened.

The activity is open to all, and aims to create a space for disseminating recent academic studies on the Eastern Region (Rocha, Maldonado, Treinta y Tres, Lavalleja and Cerro Largo). The intention is to open a debate and to reflect on territorial transformations along with civil society, private players, and those who wish to become involved in this topic.

Supported by the Interdisciplinary Space of the University of the Republic (Udelar) through the 2017 Interdisciplinary Events Program and Central Service of Extension and Activities in Udelar through the 3rd Call for Activities in 2017 and the Municipality of Maldonado.
