Foreign thesis student researching vulnerability in artisanal fisheries at SARAS Institute
Manuela Teruggi is an Italo-Uruguayan student who arrived at our institute two months ago with the aim of completing her research as part of the postgraduate course “Economics of the Environment, Culture and Territory”, at the University of Turin, Italy.
Manuela’s thesis, “Analysis of the Vulnerability of Artisanal Fisheries to Climate Change in Uruguay” is linked to the currently undergoing project entitled “Analysis of vulnerability, resilience and climate change adaptation of Uruguay’s productive sectors” being executed by SARAS in collaboration with the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) of Uruguay though a Letter of Agreement with FAO.
Manuela’s work chases three main goals: to propose a series of indicators that may allow the monitoring of artisanal fisheries’ vulnerability to climate change and variability along the Uruguayan coast over time; to analyse the climatic vulnerability in the Municipality of Piriápolis (Maldonado, Uruguay) using such indicators; and finally, to investigate into the social, institutional and economic variables that mostly influence the sector’s vulnerability, so as to be able to identify potential strategies and actions that may reduce it.
The research is expected to represent a key asset for the National Plan of Adaptation to Climatic Variability and Change from the Farming sector in Uruguay, being developed by the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries.
This type of cooperation is aligned with SARAS mission to promote and support the networking and collaborative work, and through interdisciplinary research, to the production of knowledge and capacity building in processes and mechanisms that determine the sustainability of ecosystem services, key to determining human well-being.
