Decision Making and Climate Change: Closing the Gap Between Science and Policy in Latin America and the Caribbean, a book recently published by

the Regional Office of Science of UNESCO in Latin America, brings together a collection of studies from the Regional Center on Climate Change and Decision-Making (a initiative of UNESCO and the Avina Foundation). SARAS has been a part of this Initiative since it was established in 2013.

The objective of the study is to explore the status of scientific knowledge and how it connects with decision making and climate change in the Latin American context. Also, it addresses the question of how to build the “bridges needed to connect effectively science with policy in the context of climate change and decision making.”

Nestor Mazzeo, Director of Science in collaboration with Pedro Roberto, IEE-USP identified the need to overcome the difficulties caused by fragmentation and sectorization in the analysis process because issues such as climate change are highly complex. The chapter aims to build a science-policy dialogue to address the analysis and management of climate change. Interaction is key to understanding past and present difficulties and sustaining at the same time strategies to overcome and transform.

This study falls under the most important contributions and challenges faced by the Center, such as improving available scientific knowledge for effective public policies, integrating the challenges brought about by climate change to the design and implementation of public policies across the board; improving research possibilities, integrating effectively national and regional capacities to international networks on climate change, among other commitments.
