To celebrate World Environment Day, a series or talks and activities open to the public were carried out.
The activities have two main objectives. On the one hand, to inform the public about the work that the Laguna del Sauce Basin Commission (Comisión de Cuenca de Laguna del Sauce) is doing. The Commission established in 2010 is the first one formed for Uruguay. Its members include a variety of national and local stakeholders such as DINAMA, DINAGUA, DINOT, MGAP, UDELAR-CURE, civil societies, OSE, OSE-UGD, council members, IDM-Office of Hygiene and Environmental Management and the Territorial Management Unit. They have been working on different measures to preserve the Laguna del Sauce’s water quality and quantity. This lagoon is the main source of drinking water for department of Maldonado. There will also be lectures describing research directly related to management of this resource.
