Intensive course on Climate Politics and Global Energy

Intensive, one-week postgraduate-level course by Prof. Eduardo Viola.

Course contents

This course will cover seven main issues:
1- The recent dynamics of the international system: crises of democracies, rise of authoritarianism, rise in economic and geopolitical conflicts.
2- The acceleration of disruptive technologies (focus on Big Data, Industry 4.0, Artificial Intelligence, Synthetic Biology and Nanotechnology) and their impact on societies and the international system.
3- The shaping and development of the international Climate Change regime with a focus on the period after the recent Paris Agreement.
4- The geopolitics and geo-economics of energy in the international system.
5- The revolution of the latest renewable energies and the advancement potential in relation to low-carbon economic development.
6- The domestic climate and energy policies of the great powers: USA, EU, China, India, Japan and Russia.
7- The energy and climate policies in Latin America: the cases of Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Uruguay.

Targeted audience

Students enrolled in postgraduate programmes and technicians working on governmental agencies related to: environment, public policy, international relations, economics, agriculture and energy.

Requirements

Completed undergraduate studies and preferably enrolled in a postgraduate programme. Basic knowledge on environmental global issues and climate change.
This is an intensive course. Please allow for additional reading time between classes.

Passing the Course

Students will have to submit a written 10-page assignment related to the topics discussed on the course. Each participant will choose the topic or topics of their own interest. The deadline for submissions will be October 20th.

Total class hours: 20 hours
Start: September 10, 2018.
End: September 14, 2018.
Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9am to 1pm
Optional interviews will be carried out every day between 3pm and 5pm, for participants to further discuss their personal projects.
Mode: in-person at SARAS Institute (Bella Vista, Maldonado)
This course is free of charge.

More information on Eduardo Viola

Full Professor of International Relations, University of Brasilia, since 1993 and Senior Researcher of the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPQ) since 1986. He is also the coordinator at CNPQs “The International System in the Antropocene and Climate Change”. Viola has a Masters in Sociology from the University of Campinas (1978), a Doctorate in Political Science from the University of Sao Paulo (1982) and a Post-doctorate in International Political Economy from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He teaches at the Earth Systems Governance Programme based in the University of Lundt (Sweden). Eduardo Viola has been visiting professor in several international universities, among them: Stanford, Colorado at Boulder, Texas at Austin, Notre Dame and Amsterdam. He is and has been a member of several scientific committees and has published nine books, more than fifty articles in journals, more than fifty book chapters in several countries and languages on issues of Globalization and Governance, Global Environmental Policy, International Relations in South America, and International Political Economics on Energy and Climate Change. Prof. Viola has recently published: Brazil and Climate Change. Beyond the Amazon. New York, Routledge, 2018. This represents the firs systematic book on Brazil’s place in the International Political Economics of Climate Change, and also includes a large theoretical development in the area of political science and international relations. Currently the focus of his research is “The international system in the Anthropocene”. He is frequently interviewed by TV channels, news radios and newspapers.
