Outreach

The SARA(S)² Institute is frequently asked to participate in the study of relevant issues related to socio-ecological systems management, which is particularly conspicuous in Uruguay (at local and national levels). In the last year, SARA(S)² also cooperated with joint initiatives between Brazil and Uruguay. Some of the researches had been selected because they are representative of Institute’s main lines of research.

In the last few years a comprehensive study of problems related to drinking water supply, the management of this resource and soil use  took place at Laguna del Sauce and his watershed. The main results of this project were exposed last year and can be accessed in pdf in the following link:

Currently, members of the Institute are developing a project on New Politics and Guidelines for Agriculture Adaption to Climatic Change – TCP/URU/3301: MGAP-FAO in conjunction with university scientists (UdelaR) from the Facultad de Ingeniería (Rafael Terra) Facultad de Ciencias (Mario Bidegainj) and the Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educación (Javier Taks). In brief a document will be available containing the following topics:

  1. Introduction. Complexity of Coupled Human and Natural Systems (CHANS).
Co0nditioning factors for adaptation, innovation and transformation capacities.
  2. Case of Study.
Main features of Uruguayan productive matrix and agricultural activities selected by MGAP.
  3. Natural climatic variability of the region and main changes during the Anthropocene.
  4. Instrumental record climatic variability for Uruguay.
  5. Strengths and weakness of available databases.
Not recorded, not analyzed or lack of relevant information for selected productive systems.
  6. Future scenarios of climatic variability for Uruguay and the region.
  7. Potential and limitations in climatic variability prediction the region.
  8. Priorities to increase Uruguayan adaptive  and transformation capabilities to face future scenarios of climatic variability.
  9. References.
  10. Glossary.

This project is funded by a FAO-MGAP agreement
